Critique two

I went into this project without any specific ideas except that I would be doing self-portraits. I picked up a 4 ft roll of iridescent cellophane from a craft store, which was being sold as wrapping material for Easter baskets. The effects of the rose colored, semi-reflective plastic made for highly stylized, saturated images. I often use myself as a model/actor in many of my works. I find the process of improvised performance with my body as a means of creating a message very compelling.

Wrapping my face in plastic had me thinking about the expectations of a woman’s experience to come in these neat little packages, like dolls lined up on shelves at a toy store. My work is a result of those expectations when they become suffocating the more we try to break away from the structural forces of patriarchy.
